Hi, I’m Ilia Jones, Licensed Professional Counselor in Suwanee, Georgia. In this video, I wanted to talk about what you can expect in a first session of therapy with me. The first session is really a chance for you to get to know me and for me to get to know you, and to see if it feels like a good fit.
At the beginning, I will review some basic paperwork and go over informed consent, confidentiality, and how therapy works. Then I will ask you what brings you in and what you are hoping to get out of counseling. You can share as much or as little as you feel comfortable with, and it is completely fine if you are not sure where to start.
I will ask some questions about your background, your current situation, and any symptoms you may be experiencing, like anxiety, depression, or trouble in relationships. This helps me get a clearer picture of what is going on and how I might be able to help. You are always welcome to ask me questions, too, about my approach or what I am thinking.
By the end of the first session, I will usually share some initial impressions and talk with you about possible goals for therapy or next steps. You are never locked in; part of the purpose of the first meeting is for you to decide whether you feel comfortable working with me. My hope is that you leave the session feeling heard, understood, and a little less alone with whatever you are dealing with.
