How Can I Know if I Need Therapy

Hi, I’m Ilia Jones, licensed professional counselor in Suwanee, Georgia, and I’m here to answer the question, how can I tell if I need therapy? A lot of people might wonder whether they need therapy or not. Some of the ways that you could determine whether you need therapy, or would benefit from therapy, is if you believe that your feelings are keeping you from making the changes and living the life that you want to. If you believe that your emotions are holding you back or preventing you from doing certain things, either because you’re afraid or you lack confidence, or maybe sometimes you don’t think you have some of the skills, the social skills or soft skills that you need to get the life that you want, then therapy may benefit you.

If you are dissatisfied with your relationships, your friendships, or your ability to function and manage your emotions, then therapy might also benefit you, and you might be able to learn some ways of handling those situations. Sometimes other people will suggest that you could benefit from therapy; maybe friends and family have told you that you really should go into therapy, and that also may be a sign that it would benefit you. Or if you have lived through some life experiences or some trauma or some difficult situations that you think may have impacted your confidence level or your ability to trust your decision making, or have resulted in you feeling insecure, then it may be really helpful for you to get some therapy and learn some new skills and new ways of thinking and feeling about the world and about yourself, and figuring out how to live and lead the life that you would really like to.
