Should I Bring in Family Members to Therapy?

Video Transcript

Hi, I’m Ilia Jones, licensed professional counselor in Suwanee, Georgia. And I wanted to talk to you about coming to therapy if you are wanting to improve your relationship with other adults in your life, whether they maybe be your aging parents or maybe your adult children and you want to improve that relationship and you’re wondering if you should come in by yourself or maybe you’re wondering if you should try to ask them to come with you.

What I would recommend is that we meet first and we talk about what you are hoping to get, what you think you might be doing wrong, what other people are telling you that they need from you, and your perspective on that. And then we will practice looking at the situation from different perspectives. We’re going to practice empathy. We’re going to practice putting ourselves in the other person’s shoes. We’re going to see if there’s other ways of looking at the relationship to see if there are changes that need to be made.

I will work with you to teach you how to practice empathy, how to ask questions for understanding and clarification, how to listen to feedback and see if there’s anything that can be learned. And maybe eventually then we could decide to ask somebody to come into therapy session with you so that you can talk about things with me there also to help clarify your values and your wishes and help facilitate the conversation.

So, I think at first it would be helpful to come in and kind of get your perspective and your story on how you would like to make improvements and see where we go from there. Hope this helps. Feel free to like or subscribe if you want to see more of my content. Thanks.
